What is it about the anointing that makes us as Christians so special? What does it mean to anoint or be anointed? Wikipedia says it like this: To anoint is to pour or smear with perfumed oil, milk, water, melted butter or other substances, a process employed ritually by many religions. People and things are anointed to symbolize the introduction of a sacramental or divine influence, a holy emanation, spirit, power or God. It can also be seen as a spiritual mode of ridding persons and things of dangerous influences, as of demons.
We read in the Holy Bible, many stories of the anointed. We read in 1 Samuel 16 where Samuel anointed David to be king of Israel. The Bible says in James 5:14, “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” What is so special about the act of anointing a person or thing with oil? What’s so special about the olive oil that is used for anointing in the Christian faith? Do olives have some type of power in them to cast out demons or heal the sick? According to http://www.whfoods.org, olives are very important to human health. The benefits are too many to list. However, in nearly every church in America and around the world, you will find a bottle of olive oil used for anointing. Still I’m not convinced that the oil itself has the power to heal or repel a demon.
So here it is! Oil is widely understood as the symbol of the Holy Spirit of God. With this knowledge, we can see that by anointing or putting oil on someone or something, it is an act of our faith. We are believing as the oil is symbolic to the Holy Spirit, that the person or thing we anoint will be protected and accompanied by the Holy Spirit Himself. I do believe there is also what we call the anointing. This anointing is different from one person to another. The anointing is what I would call the power that surrounds a Christian. This electrifying power house is the presence of the Holy Spirit within us! I believe our personal anointing can grow stronger as we dive deeper into the things of God. The more we study God’s Word and overcome the trials and testings we face, we get stronger in our faith. I believe this grows the anointing in our lives, and helps us to be better equipped to minister to the lost.
